Your central heating system maintenance worrys can stop right away
Summer time does not cause one to worry much about heating, but as long as you are used to your hot showers with no other alternatives, you might be in for some trouble if your gas boiler malfunctions when winter arrives. A gas boiler is that hidden part of the home which is rigorously used and not noticed until it stops working. All of a sudden, following an unexpected problem, it becomes an essential and prominent piece of equipment but rather expensive to repair.
If you rent your home, you won’t have to worry about having some money aside for the central heating system repairs; your landlord will cover it. However, for homeowners it is always a good idea to make sure you have a little money saved to pay for any unforeseen malfunctions.
Instead of repairing a ten year old boiler, consider installing a newer and more efficient system which could significantly cut down your utility bills and pay for itself in a number of years. Your choice of a central heating boiler should be determined by the capacity required (based on family needs), the space available for the heating boiler and the existing heating system. If you have a compact family and need hot water at short notice, a combi boiler is a better choice. In a combi boiler water is drawn through the mains and heated immediately eliminating the need of storage tanks. Although it is a great luxury to have on demand hot water at the turn of a tap take care if you’re in the shower when someone runs the hot tap!, the system will have a limited hot water heating capacity.
The other option is to have a sealed system gas boiler which uses a storage tank, which allows bigger families to use different water outlets at the same time without affecting the water pressure or temperature. Such a sealed system is convenient to install and also saves on space. But if hot water is used too quickly it would run out because the storage tank hot water would be depleted and is replenishment is not instant.
The most space is taken , two water tanks in the attic and a storage cylinder in the upstairs airing cupboard, by a open vent central heating boiler normally found in older houses. This has similar benefits and drawbacks to the sealed systems as it enables several taps to be used at once, but you will have to wait for the water to heat and pressure is sometimes an issue.
A Back heating boiler is another central heating boiler which provides good water pressure, allows several water outlets but occupies quite a bit of space. The space inside a chimney breast is often used to accommodate a back central heating boiler; but installing a new back central heating boiler system to replace another type of central heating system is not cost effective. But if your home had a back central heating boiler installed when you moved in, it can save you a lot of money; if it needs replacing, it’s far cheaper to get a new back central heating boiler to replace and old one than it is to get a completely different system installed.
Any malfunctioning heating boiler system requires expensive overhauling and repair. That is why it is important to get heating insurance so you can be confident that any costs will be taken care of if something breaks down, costs which cover labour and spare parts for your heating boiler. Take out a central heating system maintenance policy that covers annual central heating system inspections as well as call-outs and repairs and you could save yourself an extra amount per year.
