There are several kinds of Gas Central Heating Systems that can be bought in the market. Most of them consist of a set of heating heating radiators, a gas boiler and copper pipework.

Pumped/vented systems are the most common. An expansion tank is present in a pumped heating system. The tank supplies your house with hot water and provides the heating radiators with heat. The expansion tank has adequate space to accommodate any water expansion that occurs due to heat. You will most likely find the expansion tank kept in the highest part of the house. It not only heats the house, but also supplies hot water.
Many homes feature a pumped/vented Central Heating System, particularly the ones constructed several year ago.
A slightly newer gas boiler is sealed heating system and this is the preferred heating system in newer properties. No water tanks are needed with the sealed system. The attic has no tanks or piping, the system is completely enclosed and locked, it’s not ventilated, and that has its advantages:.
- As there are no pipes, they cannot freeze up in the attic.
- No maintenance work on the tank or pipes that would be in the attic in a pumped/vented system.
- The risk of leakage is decreased as there are fewer pipes and the system is less complex.
- Reduced risk of air locks, corrosion and sludge as there isn’t a chance of air being drawn down into the system through open vents as the system is sealed.
- If necessary, the system can be flushed out under pressure using the main water supply.
Such a Sealed Central Heating System is installed with all the required gauges, controls and safeguards. The mains water supplies the water required for the sealed Central Heating system. It is plumbed straight into the main water supply.
The system also has a pressure vessel which contains compressed gas, it controls the variations in pressure and a diaphragm is used to separate it from the sealed system. If the pressure is very high in the system, then the water will escape from the safety valve, and if the pressure is too low, then the safety valve will open to let the water in.
Compared to any other form of heating, Central Heating systems are by far the most practical and economical. They offer you a lot more control of your home environment than the other heating systems.
