A central heating system is basically a boiler with pipes carrying the heat to central heating radiators placed in all the rooms; these systems can be of the pumped or vented type.
Pumped systems are probably the more common ones and their main part is a feed expansion tank which acts as the centre core by heating up itself first to subsequently warm up the heaters via the pipe work. Provision is made for water to be filled in the expansion tank tank as well as for expansion of the heated water.
There is also what is known as a sealed system in which no centre core is used to warm the central heating radiators. It is basically a closed system, and for this reason, there is no need of water tanks. Chief advantages of vented systems are: there is no risk of leaking water tank; major problems like airlocks are also not associated with such systems; furthermore, they are specifically useful in cold countries because there is no risk of freezing pipes.

In earlier times, gas, electrical or storage heaters were utilised. However, these older heating methods make the air sticky and hard, and can also emit an unpleasant odour.
These air quality issues were eliminated by central heating; but such a desirable environment can be ensured only by periodic servicing of the central heating system to keep it running efficiently and safely. In many households, these systems are not used during the summertime, but as soon as the winters set in, they are intensely used; this should not be done. It is more prudent to routinely switch on the system in autumn as wintertime approaches, so that any hitches can be repaired by summoning a central heating expert well in time.
You should also keep in mind that most houses gas central heating systems can let air or dirt into it, therefore they need periodic draining. You can achieve this most effectively by putting a a bucket under the valve and opening it carefully to release the water, but you need to take extra care to prevent any additional water from entering the system.
