Deflect the issues in a central heating maintenance

Heating your home isn’t that much of a problem in the summertime, but unless you’re in the strange habit of only taking cold showers and boiling the kettle every time you wash up, you could be left high and dry if your central heating system breaks down. It is only when the central heating system breaks down that you become acutely aware of its importance in your home. And as soon as it stops working, everyone realises how essential it is and how expensive repairs can be.

You don’t need to save money for repairing your gas boiler if you stay in a rented home, that will be done by your landlord, check that they have landlords central heating boiler cover. However, for homeowners it is always a good idea to make sure you have a little money saved to pay for any unforeseen malfunctions.

It is advisable to buy a new model rather than getting your ten year old heating boiler repaired, this will cut down the fuel costs too in future years. The type of heating boiler that you should buy depends on your family size and the available space at your home, the existing central heating system also affects your choice. A combi heating boiler is the most widely known, and is good for small homes with few people, or people who don’t want to wait for their hot water. A combi heating boiler warms up the water as it flows through, removing the need to store the water in a hot water tank. Hot water is instant and on demand; but if someone runs a hot tap while you’re having a nice hot shower, be prepared to jump out quickly!.

A sealed central heating system system can cater to several family members having a hot wash or bath at the same time since it utilises a storage tank housed in a cupboard or loft, thus ensuring a steady supply of pressured hot water. This boiler can easily be installed within hours and doesn’t require excess space. The main disadvantage, however is that you will have to wait for the water in the tank to heat up.

However the central heating boiler which is most commonly used in older homes is the open vent central heating system, it occupies huge space and consists of a storage cylinder and two water tanks. This type of boiler is similar to the sealed system in that it lets hot water to come out of more than one tap at the same time, but it also takes time to warm up and has wavering water pressure.

The fifth type is a back gas boiler which is bulkier, but can deliver hot water to several outlets under good pressure. Back boilers are normally placed in a chimney breast, but they are not the recommended type for your house unless your home already has one. It would save you a lot of money on installation of a new gas boiler if a back gas boiler is already installed in your house when you moved in, as it is cheaper to replace an old back gas boiler rather than install a completely new heating system.

It is costly to repair a boiler which ever type your home has. So it is important to get a central heating insurance so that your costs are covered even if something goes wrong with your system. Buy a good boiler breakdown policy which not only covers the labour, repair costs and also provides annual inspections with no call out charge.
