Contract your future gas account

The news papers are full of reasons why we should cut gas use. Ever rising gas costs make it important to get the most out of your boiler and central heating system. You may be surprised to know that up to 50% of your gas costs will be related to your central heating. Here’s a few easy to execute advice to help you get lower gas charges.

Only use gas heating systems when and where you need it :
Heating radiators are made to be turned on and off. Have a view whether there are any rooms in your home which are not being used and turn off the radiator there. If an area of your home is not used frequently it really doesn’t need heating. Seal the room off by closing the door and you will have effectively contracted your home and reduced your heating bills.

Use the boiler not the fire :
A fire is far less cost-efficient than the boiler system. With coal or wood fires most of the heat disappears up the chimney, an electric fire is nowhere near as efficient as the central heating.

Use insulation to stop draughts
Drafts bring chilled air into your home wasting energy you have already paid for. DIY stores stock many insulation materials for use for this. A foam based sealer is good for shutting off any cracks between the brickwork and frame for doors or windowpanes. If you live in an aging home you might be surprised how often these gaps occur. If you are careful and use a candle flame you can detect where draughts are in a room.

Ensure you are wearing warm clothes indoors :
Putting on incremental clothes or just being active for a while will mean that you get hotter without turning up the heating thermostat. Astonishingly, a 1° reduction in the room thermostat can result in a tenpercent reduction in your energy consumption.

Make good use of your drapes :
The sun can be used to heat your home in the winter by keeping curtains open on the side of the home where it is shining. At night as the outside temperatures drop a lot of heat can leach outside through your windowpanes. closing the drapes provides an additional layer of insulation and will help to cut this heat loss, this can can save you money in the longer term. Thin drapes are not as effective as thick ones at preventing this heat loss.

The last advice for reducing your costs :
Check your central heating system and whether it has a hot water tank as this should be insulated. The hot water cylinder will hold hot water you have paid for and it is folly to allow this to cool down unused throughout the day.

Experts use silver foil in the wall space behind a radiator to stop heat escape to the outside.
